Montessori promotes independence, self-esteem, choice and meaningful activity through the recognition of individual strengths, needs, interests and the establishment of expertly prepared environments. This applies to children as well as adults. Montessori for Dementia, Disability and Aging is an innovative, evidence-based model of care that focuses on strengths, capabilities, needs and interests. In an industry where financial and human resources are limited, Montessori provides a fresh approach where client/resident independence can be maintained, boosting self-esteem and self-worth.

Led by Anne, Kelly, the head of Montessori for Dementia and Aging for Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), this workshop provides the theory and principles behind the practice of Montessori in aged and disability care settings. It includes the assessment of resident/clients’ strengths and needs, and how to develop activities and roles that enhance and maintain independence, self-esteem and cognitive function.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

• Link the needs, interests, skills and abilities of people living with dementia and /or other disabilities to the Montessori goals and objectives.

• Describe the Montessori method for aging, dementia and disability model and explain why this is a useful technique for enhancing independence and quality of life.

• Describe the Montessori philosophy as well as the basic Montessori principles as they relate to Aging, Dementia and Disability.

Respiratory Autogenic Training (R.A.T.)

Respiratory Autogenic Training (R.A.T.) is a birth preparation method focused on breathing and deep relaxation that gives control to the birthing parent. Developed by Italian obstetrician Umberto Piscicelli in the 1970s, this method conditions the mind and body to relax, even in the midst of uterine contractions. In collaboration with Dr. Silvana Quattrocchi Montanaro, an Italian medical doctor and Montessorian, the method was expanded to prepare parents for birth and parenting.

In this training, students will experience the birth class as a participant, as well as focusing on how to facilitate these classes with a deep focus on the social-emotional well-being of the pregnant parent and their partner.  Guidance around supporting families to consider Montessori methods of parenting will also be discussed.

While both focus on deep relaxation, the RAT birth technique is different from the technique utilized at the Montessori Institute during teacher trainings.  Experience with RAT during teacher trainings is not required to take this course.

Meet your Instructor - Courtney BAros, M.ED, AMI

Over the past 20 years, Courtney’s work has been deeply centered around pregnancy, birth, parenting, and the young child.  She co-owned a retail and resource center focused on ecologically conscious parenting at which she served as a volunteer lactation consultant and supported new parents through classes and meetings.  Additionally, she spent years in a variety of roles in Montessori schools in both Chicago and Denver.  After receiving her Assistants to Infancy certification through The Montessori Institute, Courtney co-piloted PIP Studio (Pregnancy • Infancy • Parenting) at Montessori Children’s House of Denver, in addition to leading a toddler community (IC).  She held many roles at MCHD over the years, but continues to guide PIP Studio, as she believes that the work of thinking deeply about parenting is vital to the well-being of children.  She lives in Denver with her partner, Andre, and 2 sons.  She is currently working toward her MA licensure in early childhood special education.  She is delighted to carry on Judi Orien’s RAT birth preparation classes for TMI students.

Upcoming Workshops from our Partners:

In support of the Montessori Community, The Montessori Institute partners with organizations that we believe bring valuable information to that community. Partners are most often alumni of TMI that have created workshops, classes and other creative offerings centered in high quality Montessori theory and practice.
